Gearing Up: Outdoor Family Opportunities – February 2014

With all of this chilly weather you’re bound to be itching to get outside with your family and stretch your legs! February brings several great opportunities to enjoy wintertime in Maine.

On Saturday, February 1, 2014 Lake George Regional Park is hosting their Annual Ice Fishing Derby Winter Carnival.  Registration for the derby begins at 5am at the boat launch. Additional activities include nordic skiing, snowshoeing, a stew cook-off, disc golf, snow sculpting, a sled box derby and a marshmallow roast at 9am.  For more info call 207-474-1292

Winter Family Fun Day at Mount Blue State Park from 10am-3pm on Saturday, February 1, 2014.  Activities include cross-country skiing, sliding, snowshoeing, sled rides, hay rides, and nature walks.  Lunch is provided and there will be free equipment loans.  Cost is $1.50 for adults 12-64, all others free!

Sheepscot Lake Fish & Game is hosting an ice fishing derby on Sheepscot Lake in Palermo on Saturday, February 1, 2014.  The derby includes a youth and an adult category.

The Snowmobile Ride-In to benefit Pine Tree Camp includes a free youth ice fishing clinic on Sunday, February 2, 2014 from 9-11am at the Durham Bridge Road end of Sebasticook Lake in Newport.  Equipment, bait and instruction will be provided!

The Phippsburg Sportsmen’s Association is hosting their annual “Take a Kid Fishing” derby on Sunday, February 9, 2014. The derby is open to all legal waters in Sagadahoc County.  Weigh-in is open from noon-4pm at their clubhouse in Phippsburg.

On Saturday, February 15, 2014 the Albion Lions Club is holding a Family Fishing Derby on Lovejoy Pond in Albion from 7am-3pm.   Registration starts at 7am on Marden Shore Drive.  There is both a youth and adult category.

Wilton Fish and Game is hosting their annual Ice Fishing Derby and FREE Family Ice Fishing Clinic on Sunday, February 16, 2014 on Wilson Lake in Wilton.  Families are invited to join us at the Canal Bridge boat launch to learn to ice fish.  Equipment and bait provided and volunteers will be on hand to provide instruction.  Pre-registration for the clinic is not required.  Tickets for the derby can be purchased in advance at Shelly’s Hometown Market in Wilton.  For more information about the clinic contact Emily MacCabe at

On Sunday, February 16, 2014 from 9am-2pm the Buxton-Hollis Rod & Gun Club is holding a free youth ice fishing event on Deer Pond in Hollis.  Equipment and instruction is provided.

Jack Traps is hosting their annual Youth Fishing Event on Friday, February 21, 2014 from 8am-2pm on Cochnewagon Lake in Monmouth.  This derby is an introduction to ice fishing open to all children twelve and under. Children who are experienced with ice fishing and those who are not, but are interested, are equally encouraged to participate. All participants must pre-register before February 15, 2014. All participants must arrive dressed in very warm clothing, including boots, hats, and mittens.Participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment, ready to fish. There will be some traps and bait on the ice for kids to fish with if they do not have their own.   This event is free to attend!

A Family Fun Day is scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Aroostook State Park from 10am-3pm.  Activities include cross-country skiing, sliding, snowshoeing, ice skating, tote sled rides, and nature walks. Includes lunch, bon fire and warming hut! Ski & Snowshoe Trailer on site for free equipment loans.  Cost is $1.50 for adults and youth 12-64; all others free!

  1. Family games that are played outdoors provide children with the opportunity to interact socially with their family members and perhaps even other people that they are friends with or live near to.
